As employers of labour, we provide secure and steady work to skilled carpenters. BD have a culturally diverse team, with carpenters originating from countries including Australia, the UK, Ireland and Canada, to name just a few. Considering a large percentage of our employees are from overseas, we recognise the need to offer more than just employment. BD has implemented sponsorship programs to carpenters to expand their carpentry experience and make Australia their new home. A significant proportion (90%) of the BD workforce come from both the UK and Ireland. Reasons for coming over vary, however most share a common interest in Sydney’s coastal living. The Australian lifestyle has even persuaded a good chunk of our carpenters to extend their stay indefinitely via sponsorship.
Having sites running all throughout Sydney, our work is incredibly diverse. From commercial decking to residential roofing, our carpenters do it all. BD can provide you with all your tools so there’s no need to fly your kit down under. Additionally, with over 40 company vehicles, our carpenters have weekly access to BD transportation to get to and from site.
We recently caught up with Jaime, one of our sponsored carpenters to ask him a few questions regarding life and work down under, and more importantly—working with BD.
WHERE ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM?
I’m from Northern London.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH BD BUILDING?
I’ve been with BD for 2 and half years now. The first year, I was on a 457 Working Holiday Visa. I fell in love with the country so I asked for sponsorship through BD which is probably the best decision i’ve ever made. Great company, great country!
HOW DOES WORK/LIFE IN AUSTRALIA COMPARE TO BACK HOME?
There’s no comparison at all in my mind. Life and work in Australia is just so much more chilled, warmer, sunnier and just more fun!
FAVOURITE PART ABOUT AUSTRALIA?
The weather and the amazing places you can see e.g. The East and West Coast is a must in a camper. The people are all chilled and easy going too.
FAVOURITE PART ABOUT WORKING WITH BD?
Perfect way to get your foot in the door without tools or a van. There’s a very helpful team and all the boys here are just like my mates back home so we all get on great.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THE LADS BACK HOME THINKING ABOUT MOVING TO AUSTRALIA?
Book your visa, get your ticket, pack your backpack and just do it! If you’re a carpenter, get yourself over to BD. They’ll sort you out!
