Mental Health in Construction – Have Your Say!
We all know that poor mental health in construction continues to be a problem, but to be able to change it, we have to gather the data to implement changes, within the practices of larger contractors as well as taking responsibility for our own practices on site day to day.
We’re working with the CIOB in a number of ways to try and better understand the needs of the self employed, small contractors and those who are employed at every level, in order to improve the shocking suicide figures we see without our sector. It is not a “one size fits” all solution because the problem is so layered. Sharing the CIOB survey and their attached information is the first in many ways we will be looking to be involved in the process.
The more that take the time to participate, the better the data will be for guiding solutions. Even if you think this doesn’t apply to you, it does. To make sure we have a voice, please, do your bit and complete their survey. Thanks. You can email me at [email protected] or message me on our Facebook Page (there are links at the top of the website) with any feedback once you’ve completed the survey and I would be happy to pass that on!
Thanks, Liz @ BTG
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is conducting a survey to explore mental health challenges within the construction industry.
Mental health problems are a growing concern across the globe. In the UK, 0.9 million workers in 2023/23 stated they were suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety. Statistics also suggest males who work in this industry are more likely to die by suicide than their peers who work in other fields.
The last report by CIOB, released in 2020, highlighted 97 per cent of construction workers had experienced high levels of stress, and 71 per cent of respondents revealed they had not received any mental health training.
Even more alarmingly, more than a quarter of those surveyed claimed they had experienced suicidal thoughts at least once in the past year.
Your input will help identify key areas for improvement and support to help the industry tackle this silent crisis.
