Introducing Stefan Martin of Mear Plastering
My name’s Stef Martin, owner and plasterer of MEAR Plastering And Building services based in South East London. I got in to the trade after working with my dad as a painter and met some plasterers on a job.
I was over the moon as I didn’t like painting at all. The guy, Dave, who taught me was a damp proof technician and on my 1st day I subbed £60 off him for a hawk and trowel. He taught me a great deal and to this day I thank him.
I went on to doing my own thing pretty quickly and worked for a couple of other damp proof companies and then hit the site work.
After 3 months with the company I subbed for on site they offered me a supervisor position PAYE, which I took. But being only 21 and telling grown men what to do was not my thing and mad I know but I missed being on the trowel. I continued working on site for a bit then got on with an insurance company as a multi trade plasterer for 4 years and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately that company went bust and I was on my way again. I ended up being a maintenance engineer in the Treasury in Westminster for 2 years before boring myself to death, so I left and started my own company up. I’ve been doing well, building up a good client base and doing many more things than before, such as Monocouche and K-rend. It’s all domestic based work and I do a lot for kitchen fitter’s and builders. I’m starting to enjoy it again and have found some great advice and tips on the Plasterers’ Talk Group! Thanks for reading and keep on spreading.
